Definition/Overview: The Salem Press Encyclopedia provides a good introductory overview on the topic of Marvel Comics:
Marvel Comics is the core of Marvel Entertainment, the largest comic book publishing conglomerate in the United States. Marvel Comics started out during the Great Depression as a small line of comic books but grew into a vast network of imprints. Marvel’s most popular comics include The Amazing Spider Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, The Fantastic Four, and X-Men. Marvel Entertainment was acquired by Walt Disney in 2009. Marvel Comics and DC Comics are often referred to as “the big two,” mainly because they make up 80 to 90 percent of the comic book market. (Salem Press Encyclopedia, 2019, p. 3)
